Hi all
- Do you download movies, TV shows and or video files from the internet?
- Do you record videos using your digital camera or camcorders with your friends and family?
most of us do it, and also so many people downloading videos from P2P programs such as ( T0rrents, 3mule, K@zz@ ...etc). also most of us want to watch them on TV instead of their laptops, cams, computers ..etc.
In this topic I will discuss about one of the solutions that will help you to watch your TV or home theater of you have it.
1st Product I'm going to talk about is:
( WD TV HD Media PLayer)

For .mkv files, i guess you know that some of them ripped with high quality sound like DTS and something like that, to run it on WD-TV-HD on the TV, you have to connect the sound cable either using HDMI or Optical cable, otherwise it will only play the video without audio.

Yeah everyone does know that the PS3 plays Downloaded multimedia files. but does it play .mkv files without transforming or scaling it frm the network or converting them to another extension?. does it play .avi video files larger than 3GB?. can you import subtitle to the movie that you are playing?
the answer will be for my questions is ( NO ) if you are using the XMB of the PS3, but it will be yes if you are using Linux (yellow Dog, Ubuntu) in the PS3.
The only advantage that the PS3 can and the WD-TV-HD cannot play or run is the copyrighted downloadable movies like from (iTunes, Amazon, ...etc)

Actually i did not tried this option as i don't have surround sound system. but i guess yes you can, there is an option in the audio settings.
and regarding the .mkv files, to play them with HQ video and Audio you have to connect them through the HDMI and you will get the quality of the files it self.
Don't forget it has an Optical that you can use for audio instead of using composite cables.

yes but the problem is that my surround system does not have optical only composite. And is this really worth it? because i have my computer connected to my tv but the problem is when i try to play .mkv files it is laggy and the video and audio are out of sync so does the WD media player play the .mkv files normally without any slow downs?

I havent tried .mkv through HDMI yet, but i tried them through composite and they work super fine. but if the .mkv file ripped with (DTS, DD5.1, ...ect) or any HQ audio it will not play the sound through composites, it will only play them with the HDMI or Optical sound.
If you are looking to upgrade your Audio appliance, there is couple appliances in Eurika ive seen and they support Optical and HDMI, and they cost around 120KD - 200KD and their brand is YAMAHA.

wow this is awesome im gonna get one for sure! thanks for posting man
but one thing im afraid of, if i get it and then Sony release a patch for PS3 which supports the .mkv files and other formats that don't work on PS3 right now..so it would be a waste..
what do you think?

waiting for patch = waste your time.
you can run .mkv files in your TV only in several ways and some of them are:
1- to turn your PC into Media server and connect your PC to it and run them from the PS3
2- to get WD TV HD and copy your .mkv files to an external HDD and plug it into the WD TV HD and run it on the TV
3- There is a company called ( TVIX ) or ( DVICO ) they sell a network device that can run .mkv but they are costly starting from 100KD and above. i'll write a review about it
4- There is also a several devices same as Dvico but the companies who made it is a low budget or Chinese and it will not be stable. and i personally don't recommend them.

does it support arabic subtitle ?
Computerized
22-02-2009, 11:36 PM
it doesnt matter what is the language of the subtitle, the main thing is the subtitle extension for example (XXXXXX.srt, XXXXXX.smi, XXXXXX.sub, XXXXXX.ass, XXXXXX.ssa)
( XXXXXX --> the file name )
